The dental implant timeline, explained month by month

The first stage assesses whether there is enough bone in the right place, how your bite loads that area, and whether the gum tissue will give a natural-looking result. Imaging guides the position of the implant so the eventual crown emerges where a natural tooth would.

Placement is usually a single appointment under local anaesthetic. Most patients are surprised by how routine it feels and describe recovery as milder than an extraction. Swelling and tenderness for a few days are normal.

Over the following months, bone grows into the microscopic surface texture of the implant. This is what turns a metal post into a functional root. Loading it too early risks failure, which is why reputable timelines run in months rather than weeks.

If grafting was needed, add more time. It is not a delay — it is the reason the implant will still be there in fifteen years.

Once integration is confirmed, an abutment connects the implant to a custom crown matched to your neighbouring teeth in shade and translucency. From there, the maintenance is ordinary: brush, clean around the crown, and keep hygiene appointments.
